  1. Maybe the change from the community values that characterized small town America to some kind of dominant cowboy myth should be mentioned since more than the 1% are persuaded.

    • Certainly, the rugged individual settling the wild west is part of the American mythos. There’s also more than a little of the lottery fantasy — if there’s a 1%, maybe one day I’ll be in it, or my children will be in it, so let’s not get rid of it. And, of course, it helps that the 1% own the businesses that provide the jobs for the rest of us, leaving us vulnerable to an economic version of the Stockholm syndrome.
